The new phone came in a box the size of a paperback and there is a little plastic tool in it for the tray, and she has lost that tool three times in twenty minutes.
Half past eleven, kitchen table, everything else in the house asleep. The old phone finally gave up on Tuesday, in the middle of a call, which is how those things always go. So here she is doing the thing nobody enjoys, with a cable in each hand and the two phones face up next to each other like patients.
Restore from backup. She taps it. The bar starts.
It takes a while, and she gets up and puts the kettle on and comes back, and the icons are arriving in waves now, graying in and then coming clear, the way they do. Messages. Photos. The banking one. The one for the parking meters downtown that she has never once gotten to work.
And then a folder, and inside the folder a notes app she does not use any more, and inside that, near the top because it was pinned, a list.
She had deleted that list. Deliberately. On a Tuesday in the spring, eighteen months ago, sitting in a parked car outside a place she does not need to describe, because she had opened it that morning and reading it had been exactly like pressing on a bruise to see if it still hurts, and it did, and she thought: I am not doing this to myself any more. And she held her thumb down on it and confirmed it twice and drove home and did not tell anybody.
Eighteen months of nothing. Not a rejection of anything. She still went. She still sang. She just stopped bringing that up, the way you stop mentioning a name in a house where mentioning it makes everybody go quiet.
And now a machine that knows nothing, that has no opinion about her at all, has handed it back at half past eleven on a Thursday.
She does not open it. She also, and this is the part she notices, does not delete it. She just sits there with the kettle going and the list back on the screen where it used to live.
That is you, perhaps, at your own table. You put something down a long time ago because carrying it was costing more than you had. And something tonight has quietly put it back within reach, and you have not touched it, and you have not thrown it away either.
What Jesus said right after the awkward story
There is a line everybody knows, and almost nobody knows what it comes immediately after, and the order matters enormously here.
Jesus had just told a story about a man who goes to his friend's house at midnight because unexpected company has turned up and he has nothing in the cupboard. The friend is in bed. The children are in bed. The door is locked. And the man knocks anyway, at the worst possible hour, being a nuisance, with nothing to offer and nothing to trade, and he gets what he came for.
And then, straight off the back of that:
And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.Luke 11:9
Notice where the invitation is placed. It does not come after a story about a well behaved person with a tidy record who has kept up their side. It comes after a story about somebody arriving at an inconvenient hour with nothing, and it is spoken as an instruction, which means the asking is not something you talk God into. It is something He told you to do.
You are holding an instruction, not a favor you have to earn back into. Luke 11:9 is where it stands written, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a sentence Jesus said to a handful of tired men and lands it on a woman at a kitchen table eighteen months into her silence, which is why the door in that verse is not a door you have to talk anyone into opening.
Nobody here is going to ask you for a promise
Let me get some things out of the way, because you would be forgiven for bracing against them since the top of the page.
Your silence was not unbelief. Eighteen months of not bringing something up is not a rebellion, a backsliding, a hardness, or a door you closed on God. It was a person protecting a wound, which is what a body does automatically and what a soul does too, and God is not offended by a flinch. Nobody failed here. That sentence does not belong anywhere near you.
And I am not going to ask you to promise anything. Not to start praying about it again daily. Not to commit to anything at all. This page will not extract a resolution out of you at half past eleven, tired and thin as tonight is, because a promise made in this condition is a debt tomorrow, and there are enough of those already. If you never open that list again, this article is still for you and God is still exactly where He is.
What I am going to say is smaller and much better than a promise. The door in Luke 11 does not shut while you are not knocking. There is no lapsed status. There is no reapplication.
You were not removed from anything, and there is no penalty on this account. Romans 11:29 says the gifts and calling of God are without repentance, which is a sentence about a God who does not take things back, and it is His Spirit who makes that a live fact about tonight and not a doctrine sitting on a shelf.
And one more thing, said plainly because I mean it. If the eighteen months went further down than tired, if some part of you has quietly stopped wanting to be here, tell a living human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988, at any hour of the night. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you tonight. A page cannot do that. You deserve a person in the room, and nothing about needing one is a failure.
Somebody else kept the list too
Here is the thing I find almost unbearable in a good way about tonight, and it is not really about the phone.
The backup kept the list because that is what a backup does. It has no feelings about it. But there is a psalm about a God who keeps a record of things nobody else thought worth recording:
Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?Psalm 56:8
He counts the wanderings. He keeps the tears in a bottle, which is an image so tender it barely survives being said out loud. And He writes it in a book. The whole verse is a picture of a God with a filing system for exactly the things you deleted because you could not look at them.
So the list was never only on a phone. The asks on it went somewhere the moment they were made, and deleting the copy on your device did not delete the copy He has.
You have every one of those asks still standing before God, and not one of them expired while you were quiet. Psalm 56:8 is where that stands written, and it is the Spirit of God who keeps them present before Him, which is why eighteen months of silence has not cost you a single item on that list.
So here is the turn, and it is very small, and small is right for tonight.
Right now, as you read this, the door in Luke 11 is not shut, and the eighteen months did not shut it. That is what Jesus is recorded as saying about asking, seeking and knocking, and it is His Spirit who makes that a description of the actual door in front of you rather than a general principle about doors.
And now the honest thing, both halves in the same breath, here where the heat is highest, because this is exactly where a promise would be easiest and most dishonest.
God heals. He heals bodies, Scripture says so plainly, and everything on this site stands on that being true. And I do not promise you the result. Not the thing at the top of that list, not the timing, not the shape it takes. I do not know, and no honest voice does. We say what He said and the current is His to send. And if it does not come, or does not come the way you asked in the spring of the year you deleted it, that is not a verdict on you, not on your faith, not on the eighteen months, and anyone who tells you it is has stopped speaking for God.
You have a hearing tonight that does not depend on how recently you used it. It is written in Hebrews 4:16 that we come boldly to the throne of grace, and it is the Spirit of God who gives that boldness to somebody who has not spoken up in a year and a half, which is exactly the person the verse was written for.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud at the table, with the phone face up and the list unopened. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you, and the authority in them is His and was handed over in Him, and eighteen months of silence took nothing off it. Scripture is the ground under every line and it is the Holy Spirit who carries them, not your certainty, which is thin tonight, and that is allowed. What God does with the thing at the top of that list is His to decide, and I speak all three of these underneath that. Nothing here promises a result or puts a date on one, and nothing here asks you to promise anything either. What is settled is that the door was never shut and the asks were never lost.
- List the backup handed back tonight, you are eighteen months old and you are not a charge sheet. Luke 11:9 has Jesus saying ask, and He attached no waiting period to it.
- Idea that I forfeited my turn, you moved in on the drive home that spring afternoon and you have no right to stay. Out, in the name of Jesus. It is written that the gifts and calling of God come without repentance, and His Spirit is the one who kept every item on that list before Him while I said nothing.
- Lord, I am naming it out loud tonight, once, after a year and a half, and I am not promising You a routine. Your word says ask and Your Spirit is carrying this sentence, and what You do with this body is Yours and not mine to promise. I am putting it back in front of You and going to bed.
