The Line She Left Off the Card

The card is an index card, the plain kind, and it lives in the front of her Bible behind the ribbon, and it has been written on in at least three different pens.

Kitchen table, quarter past six, the mug with the faded lettering on it. This is the best twenty minutes of her day and she is not sentimental about many things but she is about this. She takes the card out, and she goes down it.

Her sister and the marriage. The boy across the street who moved schools twice. A friend's mother she has never met. Somebody named Dennis whose reason she can no longer remember and prays for anyway, out of loyalty to whoever she was four years ago when she wrote him down. A whole line at the bottom in green ink that just says the Hendersons, all of them.

Eleven names. She takes them one at a time and she is not fast about it and she does not read them off like a list. She means every single one.

This particular morning she gets to the end and turns the card over, because a thought arrives that she has never had before: is there anybody I have missed. The back of the card is blank. She sits looking at the blank side with the mug going cold in her other hand and understands something that has been true for four years.

There has never been a line for her own body.

Not left off by accident. There is no crossed out line, no gap, no place where something used to be. The card simply grew around it, the way skin closes over. She wrote everybody else down as they came, and the one subject that woke her at three in the morning for two straight years never once made it onto the paper, and she stepped around it so smoothly, every morning, for so long, that she had genuinely stopped noticing she was doing it.

She could tell you the moment she stopped asking if she sat and thought about it. It was not a crisis of belief. It was the fourth month, and it was quiet, and it was more like putting something down than throwing it away.

That is you, perhaps, with your own card or your own list or your own drive to work. You pray. You pray properly, for real people, and you mean it. And there is one subject your prayers move around the way water moves around a rock, and it has been so long that the moving around has stopped feeling like avoidance and started feeling like the shape of the river.

The gap the card closed over

The ordinary things first. The people caring for your body are a gift and nothing here competes with them, and nothing on this page asks you to change one thing about that. Keep the appointments. This is not a choice between the two.

Now the rock in the river.

I want to be very careful about how I name what happened to you, because this category is where people get shamed with a warm voice, and I am not going to do it. Nobody here is going to call your four years unbelief. That is not what it was. Stopping was not a decision you made against God. Stopping was what a person does after being disappointed in the same specific place enough times that the asking itself became the part that hurt.

And there is something more precise underneath it, and it is worth saying out loud because most people never do. A request you never make cannot be turned down. That is the actual mechanics of it. The line stayed off the card because an unwritten line is safe, and eleven names you can hold up honestly cost you nothing you cannot afford, and the twelfth one might cost you a thing you have already run out of.

That is not cowardice. That is a person protecting the last of something. But it does mean the silence was never neutral, and it certainly was never an insult to God, and it deserves to be seen for what it is: a defense, built by somebody tired, in a bad month, four years ago.

So let me give you the verse that has the strangest word in it for a person in your position:

Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.Hebrews 4:16

Boldly. Not carefully. Not once you have got your reasons in order, not once you can say for certain what you believe about it now. It is already yours, this welcome, on exactly the terms you are standing in, and it was settled long before your fourth month. That is not my opinion of you. Hebrews 4:16 calls it a throne of grace and says the coming is bold, and it is the Holy Spirit who walks somebody up to it rather than the confidence they can manufacture at a kitchen table.

Boldly is a strange word for somebody who stopped

Sit with what that verse assumes about the person doing the coming. It says time of need. Not time of strength, not time of good form. The whole sentence is built for somebody arriving in poor shape, and the writer has just said, a line earlier, that the one on the throne is touched with the feeling of our infirmities. The room you would walk into is not staffed by anybody who has to have your situation explained to them.

And notice what is not there. There is no waiting period. There is no penalty for the gap. Nobody at the door asks what took you so long, and nothing in that verse makes the mercy conditional on how well you have kept asking. You have a way in that does not depend on your record of showing up, it is written in Hebrews 4:16, and it is the Spirit of God who carries a person through that door and not the strength of their own case.

Now both halves of what this site says, in one breath, because either half by itself becomes a lie.

God heals. He heals bodies. It is written and it is His character and I am not going to lower my voice about it just because I cannot control it.

And I do not promise you the result. Not this time either. Not the timing, not the shape, not anything. We say what He has said and we leave the current to Him. And I want you to hear how that helps you rather than how it hurts, because you already know what it costs to ask and get nothing. If asking again came with a guarantee attached, you would be right to be suspicious of it. It does not. It comes with a throne of grace and a welcome, and those were both there for the whole four years you were not using them.

Nothing about the gap is a shortage of enough faith, and I am not going to ask you to promise anybody that you will keep asking after today. Today is enough. One sentence is enough. Nobody is signing you up for a campaign.

And one more thing, and I would rather say it and not need it. If the four years have taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking the people who love you would have less to carry without you, tell one living human being today rather than tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you tonight. A page cannot be in the room. You deserve someone who can.
