It started as a bookmark. A window envelope that came with something dull, folded in half the long way, slid into the back of her Bible to hold the place, and one evening she wrote a line on it because she did not want to forget to ask.
That was two years ago and there are now nine lines to an inch, front and back, in three different pens.
She does not use a notebook because a notebook is a project and she would have to keep it and she would have to make it good. The envelope is not a project. It is the back of an envelope, and you can write on the back of an envelope with a pen from the drawer at ten at night in your own kitchen and it does not have to be anything.
Here are some of the lines. Tuesday, the thing again. Ask about the mornings. Please, the stairs. Two weeks and nothing. Thank You for Sunday. Still the same. Ask again about the mornings. They are undated and they run into each other and she can read them all, because she wrote every one of them and she knows exactly which month each pen belonged to.
Last night she was looking for a clear patch to write on and she started at the top instead, and read the whole thing straight down, which she had never done. And she got to the bottom of the second side and put it on the table and did not move for a while.
Every line is about her body. Every single one. Two years, three pens, front and back, and not one line on that envelope is about her.
She used to tell Him things. She remembers doing it, in the way you remember a house you lived in. The row with her sister and how she was right and it did not help. The way the corridor at the school smelled in September. A joke she thought was funny and could not tell anybody. Whether she should have taken the other job. She used to bring herself.
Now she brings a status report, and she brings it faithfully, twice a day, and it is accurate and it is complete and there is nobody in it.
That is you, perhaps, with your own version of the envelope. Maybe yours is a note on your phone or a list you keep in your head. And I want to be careful here, because the wrong voice in this exact spot does real damage, and I am not going to be that voice. There is nothing wrong with your list. What I want to talk about is the blank side.
The list is not the problem
First, plainly, because you may be braced for it: I am not here to tell you that you have been praying wrong.
Two years of asking about the same thing is not nagging and it is not a small faith and it is not obsession. It is a person telling the truth every day about the thing that is actually happening to her. Somebody in your life probably wishes you would talk about something else, and that person is tired, and their tiredness is not a verdict on you. Your envelope is a record of faithfulness in ink. Keep it.
And here is what I notice in it, said gently, because it is not a fault. The list narrowed because the subject was loud, and loud subjects narrow everything. That is not a spiritual failing. It is what pain does to a field of view, and it happens to everybody, and it happened to a man who wrote a psalm.
Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.Psalm 42:5
Look at who is being addressed, because this verse is stranger than it seems. He is not asking God a question. He turns and speaks to his own soul, out loud, in God's hearing, and he says: why are you cast down, why are you disquieted in me. He brings the state of himself into the room and names it.
And he does it with no request attached. There is nothing on that line about the thing that started it. He is not asking for a change of circumstance in verse five. He is bringing the person, and he is bringing the person in front of God rather than instead of God.
You have permission for that, written into the Psalter, and you do not have to earn it by having an item to request. Psalm 42:5 is the model and it is in the book, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an old man's honesty with his own soul feel like an open door rather than a performance.
You are welcome in that conversation as a person and not as a case, and you were welcome before the envelope started. The word says the help of his countenance, which is a phrase about a face turned toward you rather than a problem being processed, and His Spirit is the one turning that face into something you can feel at a kitchen table.
The help of his countenance
Now I need to say the thing this whole category exists to say, and I am going to say it in a way that cannot be misheard.
What we are talking about here is additional. It is not a substitute and it is not a consolation prize and it is not a quieter thing you get handed when the loud thing does not happen. If somebody has ever implied to you that the real healing was inside you all along, so the body part is not really the point, I want to say clearly that they were wrong and that it was unkind. The body is the point. Your body is not a metaphor. What is on that envelope is a legitimate subject and it stays on the list.
And alongside it, not instead of it, there is a person who has not been asked after in two years. Both. At the same time. That is the whole shape of this.
God heals. He touches bodies, He does it now, He is not embarrassed to be asked twice a day for two years, and He is not in competition with the people who look after yours, so keep every appointment you have. And I cannot tell you what He does with the thing every line of your envelope is about, and I am not going to pretend I can. Anybody who hands you a guarantee has handed you something other than God. What I can hand you is what He has already said: hope thou in God, for the help of his countenance, which is a face and not a mechanism.
That sentence, the one that says you did not have enough faith and that is why the list keeps repeating, is not in the book and it is not true. Nobody wrote nine lines to an inch because they failed at something.
You are held as a whole person here, and the parts of you nobody has asked about are included in that. Psalm 42:5 puts the disquieted soul and the hope in God in one verse without choosing between them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps both on the table.
And one more thing, and I mean it. If two years of this has taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking the list would end more easily if you were not here to write it, tell one living human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you tonight. An envelope cannot do that and neither can a page. You deserve a person in the room.
The turn is one line long, and it is written on the side of the envelope you have never used.
Nothing comes off the list. Every one of those nine lines to an inch stays exactly where it is, in whichever pen it came in, because it is all true and it is all still being asked. This is not a trade and nobody is asking you to be spiritual about your body.
What happens is that the conversation gets a second subject. And the second subject is you: the row with your sister, the corridor in September, the job you did not take, the joke nobody laughed at. Those things go to God now, not because they are more important than the first subject, but because a person telling a Father only about their symptoms has slowly stopped being a daughter and started being an account.
You have a Father who has been waiting for the rest of it, and He has never once been bored by the first subject either. It stands written that He is the help of his countenance, and His Spirit is the one who makes a kitchen table at ten at night feel like a face turned toward you.
Declare this over yourself
You are not generating these out of your own strength. The standing is given to you: Christ is in you, the authority is His and not yours, and Scripture is the ground under every line below. The Holy Spirit is what carries them, not how well you say them, so say them at the table in an ordinary voice. And what God does with your body is His to decide. Nothing here dates a result and nothing here promises one, and nothing here is offered in place of the thing you have been asking for. We say back what He has already said, and we leave the rest with Him.
- Envelope in the back of my Bible, you are a faithful list and you are not the whole of me. Psalm 42:5 has a man speaking to his own soul out loud in God's hearing, and there is room for that on your blank side. I am writing one line tonight that is not about my body.
- Suspicion that I am only a case now, get out in the name of Jesus. God asks after the person and not only after the part of the body the report is about, and His word says hope thou in God. The Holy Spirit brings me back into this conversation whole, and not as a status report.
- Lord, You are the help of my countenance, and Psalm 42:5 lets me say what is cast down in me straight out loud to You. In Your name I am turning the envelope over tonight and telling You one true thing about myself. Thank You for wanting the person and not only the paperwork.
