The gravel lot behind the building empties in about nine minutes, and he has it down to about four.
Sunday, late morning, the sun already hot on the hood of the truck. He is good at this part. Shake three hands on the way out, say the thing about the weather to the man who always says the thing about the weather, keys out of the pocket before he clears the door so there is no fumbling at the truck.
Somebody catches him anyway. Somebody who is not in a hurry and does not care that he is. She says his name, and then she says: how is it, really.
And he hears himself say it. The same eleven words. He has been saying them for two years and he could say them asleep and has probably said them asleep. Holding up. You know how it is. One day at a time.
It is a very good answer. That is the thing nobody tells you about it. It is warm, it is brief, it does not lie, and it closes the subject so gently that the other person feels thanked rather than shut out. He built it himself, sentence by sentence, out of the wreckage of two or three conversations that went badly in the beginning, and it has served him faithfully ever since.
She does not leave. She stands there on the gravel with her bag over her shoulder and she does not fill the silence, and for about four seconds he hears his own eleven words hanging in the air the way you hear your own voice on a recording.
And he thinks: those are the only ones I have left.
Not the only ones he uses. The only ones he has. Somewhere in twenty four months the door got so good that he stopped keeping anything on the other side of it, including for himself, including at two in the morning when nobody is asking.
That is you, perhaps, with your own hand already on your own door handle. You have an answer that works. It is honest, it is kind, and it has done its job for a long time. And you have started to notice that when you go looking for the longer one, there is nothing there.
The eleven words
Let me say something about that answer before anything else, because I know what you are braced for.
It is not cowardice. It is good work. You built it because the alternative was to hand your weather to people who could not carry it, at a time when you could barely carry it yourself, standing in a parking lot on a Sunday with somewhere to be. Do you know what that door protected? Them, some. You, mostly. And there is nothing in Scripture that requires a man to bleed publicly on gravel in order to be honest.
So we are not taking the door off its hinges. Nobody is going to make you say more than you want to say to somebody who asked out of politeness.
You are not a coward for building a good door. Psalm 139 is written by a man who knew he was thoroughly known and still chose his words carefully in public, and it is the Holy Spirit who tells the difference between guarding a thing and abandoning it.
The trouble is not the door. The trouble is that behind it, the room went dark. When a person answers in eleven words often enough, he stops rehearsing the longer version even in private, and then he goes looking for it one morning and it is not there, and the not being there feels like peace for about a month and then feels like nothing at all.
You have a heart that God has never once had to guess at, no matter how short the answer at the truck was. That is written, not wished: Psalm 139 says He knows the sitting down and the rising up and the word before it is on the tongue, and it is His Spirit who makes that a comfort instead of a threat.
Search me is a request, not a verdict
Now watch what David does at the end of that psalm, because it is the opposite of what a man does at a truck door.
Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:Psalm 139:23
He asks for it. After a hundred and fifty lines about being fully known, hemmed in behind and before, unable to go anywhere the knowledge of God is not already waiting, he turns around and requests more of it. Search me. Come in and look.
That is not an audit. That is a man opening a door on purpose to somebody who was already inside the house and letting him say so out loud. Nothing gets found that was not known. What changes is that it stops being carried alone in the dark.
Right now, as you read, you are already searched and already known, and the asking only makes it something you are in on. Psalm 139:23 is a request and not a summons, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a request like that safe to make in a gravel lot with the engine not started yet.
Now hear the honest thing, and it belongs right here rather than at the bottom of the page. God heals. He heals bodies, and Scripture says it too plainly for me to soften it, and this site was built to say that out loud. And I do not promise you the result, not the shape of it and not the timing, and nobody honest can. We say what He has said and we leave the current to Him.
And hear this next part, because on this subject it matters more than anywhere: what happens inside a person is offered alongside a body and never instead of one. It is additional. It is not a swap and it is not a consolation prize and I will not hand you a healed inside with one hand while quietly taking the other request off the table with the other. You are allowed to want both. You are allowed to keep asking for both. Anybody who has told you that being at peace about it is what God really meant all along has redefined a word to close a case, and that was not their case to close.
Nor does any of this stand against the people caring for your body. Keep your appointments. He is not in competition with them and never has been.
Rule I made about never being a burden has no right to stay. It is written that He searches and knows already, so nothing about being known is news to Him, and His Spirit is the one carrying that in, not my willingness to say a longer sentence in a parking lot.
And one more thing, straight out, because I would rather say it than not. If the room behind that door has gone somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking the short answer would be the last one anybody needed from you, tell one human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you tonight. A page cannot stand on the gravel with you. You deserve somebody who can.
So here is the turn, and it happens in the parking lot with the keys still in your hand.
It is already yours, this being fully known, and it is handed to you alongside your body and never in place of it. Psalm 139:23 is the ground under that, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an old psalm arrive on gravel in the late morning sun.
I am not going to promise you an outcome for your body. I said it already and I am saying it again at the warmest point of the page, because this is exactly where the swap would be easiest to slip past you. He heals; the outcome is His, and inner ground is not a substitute I am offering you for it. Both stay on the table. I am holding both and I am not dropping either one to make this paragraph land.
You have permission to give somebody a longer answer, and you have permission not to, and neither one changes what God already knows. It is written that He knows the word before it is on the tongue, and it is His Spirit who keeps the room behind the door lit whether or not anybody else is ever let in.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, on the gravel, before you start the truck. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you and the authority is His, delegated, and not something two years of short answers has spent. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit carries them, not how much you manage to feel while saying them. What God does with this body is His to decide, and every line is said under that, and nothing here promises a result, dates one, or offers you an inside instead of an outside. What is settled is that you are known all the way through and always were.
- Eleven words I hand out in parking lots, you are a good door and you are not a whole house. Psalm 139:23 says search me and know my heart, and I am asking for that with the truck keys still in my hand.
- Rule I made about never being a burden, you have had two years of me and you have no right to stay, and I put you out in the name of Jesus. It is written that He knows my word before it is on my tongue, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that safe, not how well I phrase the longer version.
- Lord, You search me and You know my heart, and I am asking You to and not bracing against it. I thank You that Your Spirit keeps the light on in the room behind the door, and I am giving somebody one true sentence more this week and I am still asking You for my body too.
