Daily CarriedExodus 16:4

The Chair by the Door

This message is for the four minutes at ten forty every night when you lay tomorrow's clothes and keys and bag out on the chair by the door, because your mornings do not allow any deciding, and nobody in your life knows this is the most honest thing you do all day

Ten forty at night, one lamp on, and the last thing he does before bed is lay tomorrow out on the chair by the door.

Shirt over the back, buttoned at the top button so it keeps its shape. Socks rolled and dropped into the shoes. Shoes squared and pointed at the door, because in the morning his feet will find them without his eyes being involved. On the seat, in a row: keys, wallet, the small box with the days of the week printed on the lids. Bag against the front left leg, water bottle already filled and standing in the side pocket. Jacket folded over the arm.

Four minutes. Maybe five if the shirt needs finding.

He does this because his mornings do not allow any deciding. On a good day he gets up with time to spare and none of this matters. On a bad one he has about eleven usable minutes between his feet hitting the floor and the point where everything gets harder, and not one of those minutes can be spent standing in front of a closet. So the deciding gets done the night before, by the version of him that has energy for it, and handed forward to the version of him that will not.

Six years he has been doing this. Nobody has ever seen him do it. It is not in any conversation he has had about his life, because it does not sound like anything. Try saying it out loud at a table: I put my shoes by the door. There is no way to say it that carries what it costs or what it holds.

And here is the thing I want you to notice, because he has never told anybody this either. When he finishes, he does not walk straight to bed. He stands there for a second and looks at the chair. Not admiring it. Just looking, the way a man looks at a table he has set, or a fire he has banked, or a boat he has tied up right.

He has never once called that a prayer.

That is you, perhaps, at your own version of the chair. Sunday's pills sorted at the kitchen counter. The route to the car you take instead of the shorter one. The chair moved to that side of the shower and never mentioned. A hundred small arrangements you made quietly so that tomorrow could happen, and not one of them will ever be a story anybody tells, and some part of you has come to believe that a life made of them is a life on hold.

A certain rate every day

The wilderness was not an emergency. That is the first thing, and almost nobody says it.

We tell the story as though Israel were between two events, hurrying, camping rough for a few weeks. They were out there forty years. That was their life. Children were born and grew up and had children of their own out there. It was not a gap between the real chapters. It was the chapters. And the way God fed them says everything about what He thinks of a life shaped like that.

Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.Exodus 16:4

A certain rate every day. Not a warehouse. Not a one time miracle they could point back at for the rest of their lives. A daily amount, gathered in the morning, which could not be stockpiled and did not need to be, arriving again the next day and the next and the next for four decades.

He did not give them a way out of the daily. He gave them something daily. That is a different kind of care and it is the kind a person in your situation actually needs, and He designed it that way on purpose rather than settling for it.

You are being carried at a certain rate every day, and it is not a smaller kind of provision than the dramatic kind. Exodus 16:4 is where that pattern is written down, and it is the Holy Spirit who brings a wilderness word into a kitchen at ten forty at night and lays it over a chair by the door.

Four minutes nobody sees

Now I want to say two things that get said to people in your position, and refuse both of them.

The first is that this is a lesser emergency. That because nothing is happening this week, nothing is happening. That your life is the waiting room and the real thing starts after. It is not true. Forty years of manna were not a waiting room; they were forty years of God feeding people breakfast. Ordinary is not the same as unattended.

The second is worse and it comes wrapped in encouragement. It is the suggestion that something going on this long must mean something has gone wrong in you, that a faith problem has been left too long untreated, that there is a thing you have not done. Nobody in this room is short of enough faith, and nothing is being held back for want of it. That sentence is not in the book and it has done real damage in real houses.

And I am not going to tell you that acceptance is the goal, and I am not going to tell you it is a failure. Both of those are people outside your life telling you what your inside should look like. What I will say is that God is in the room at ten forty, in the lamp light, at the four minutes nobody sees, and that He is not only in the room on the big days.

So both halves, plainly, and I hold them at once. God heals. I will not soften that, because Scripture does not soften it and this site exists to say it: He heals, He heals bodies, and it is His character rather than a rumor. And I do not promise you the result. I cannot and I will not, not on this page and not on any other. We say what He has already said and He sends the current. Keep your appointments, keep the people helping you, keep the little box with the days on the lids. The God who hears you is not competing with the ones caring for your body.

You have a life that is running right now, not a life on hold, and it is already yours in Christ rather than something waiting to be issued. That is what is written over everyone in Him, and it is His Spirit who makes four unseen minutes at a chair count as much as anything anybody ever put on a platform.

One more thing, and I mean it. If the sameness has taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking the people around you would have a lighter time of it without you, tell one living human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you tonight. A page cannot do that part. You deserve somebody in the room, and there is no shame anywhere in it.

The breakthrough

So, here, at the chair, with the shoes squared and the lamp still on.

Nothing about tomorrow changed while you read this. The eleven minutes are still eleven minutes. I am not handing you a shortcut and I am not going to pretend the arranging is unnecessary, because it is not; it is wisdom and it is love aimed forward at a person you will be in eight hours.

What changes is who you understand is standing in the room with you while you do it.

You are not alone in the ordinary hours, and you were not left to run the daily part by yourself while God waited for something more interesting. Lamentations 3:23 says His mercies are new every morning, which is a daily word for a daily life, and it is His Spirit who is present at a chair by a door at ten forty as truly as anywhere a crowd has ever gathered.

Both halves once more, here where the heat is highest and a promise would be easiest. He heals. And I do not tell you what He will do with your body or when, because I do not know, and neither does anyone who says otherwise. What I can tell you is what has already been given: today's portion, arriving today, on time, in your kitchen.

You have this day's bread and you have the One who sends it, and it is already yours and not owed to anybody. It is written in Exodus 16:4 and it was still true forty years later, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it a live word and not a nice piece of history.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud tonight, standing at the chair or sitting on the edge of the bed. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you and the authority is His, delegated, not generated by a good night's sleep or a strong feeling. Scripture is the ground under every line, and the Holy Spirit carries the words, not the volume you say them at. What God does with this body is His to decide, and all three lines are said under that. Nothing here promises you a result and nothing here dates one. What is settled is that the bread comes daily and that He is in the ordinary hours with you.

  1. Chair by the door with tomorrow squared on it, you are four honest minutes and you are not a monument to what I have lost. Exodus 16:4 says the bread came down at a certain rate every day, and a daily God built it that way on purpose.
  2. Verdict I passed on myself, get out in the name of Jesus. The idea that a life made of small arrangements is a life on hold, and that I am parked here until something more interesting happens, did not come from God and is not staying in this kitchen. It is written that He fed a whole nation an ordinary breakfast for forty years, and His Spirit is here at ten forty at night, not just on the days worth telling.
  3. Lord, You are in this hour, and You have given me this day's portion, and I take it from Your hand tonight and not from my own arranging. Your word is what I am standing on and Your Spirit is what carries it, and what You do with this body is Yours and never mine to promise. The shoes are pointed at the door, and I am going to meet You in the morning.
