Daily CarriedIsaiah 46:4

The Six Things Before the Door Opens

This message is for Every morning I do six things in the same order before I can open up, and nobody who walks in will ever know that order exists. I want to stop feeling like a man who is quietly managing himself in the dark.

Hakim gets to the shop at twenty past six, which is forty minutes before anybody expects him.

He unlocks the padlock, which takes two hands now, and lifts the shutter to about the height of his chest, not all the way. He goes in under it. He sits down on the crate by the scales, and he stays there while he counts, without moving, without doing anything a passerby would call useful. Then he stands up, and he switches on the fan, and he waits for it to turn twice before he goes further in.

Then he fills the little brass scoops and sets them in their tray in the same order they have been in since his father ran the place: the cumin, the coriander, the black seed, the cardamom, the cinnamon, the saffron in the small jar at the end that hardly anybody buys. Then he sweeps the step, out and down, three passes. Then he carries the chair from behind the counter and puts it in the patch of light by the door.

Six things. Always six, always in that order, and if the order goes wrong the whole day is heavier in a way he cannot explain to anybody and long ago stopped trying to.

At seven he lifts the shutter the rest of the way, and the street comes in with the smell of the spices, and the first woman of the morning wants two hundred grams of coriander and to know how his sister is, and he is a shopkeeper again, quick and funny, the way people know him.

Nobody who walks in will ever know the six things happened. That is the part he thinks about, some mornings, sitting on the crate in the half dark. Not the order. The unwitnessed part. A whole hidden system running under an ordinary man, keeping an ordinary day possible, and no living person has ever seen it.

That is you, perhaps. On your own crate, in your own half light, forty minutes before anybody expects you.

The order nobody sees

Let me say what this article is not going to do to you, so you can relax.

It is not going to call your morning a lesser kind of emergency, as though the only real subject is the dramatic thing and yours is a footnote to it. It is not going to treat a long condition as a faith problem that has gone on too long, because that is a lie told by people who need every story to finish. And it is not going to hand you acceptance as the goal, or call it a failure if you never arrive at it. Acceptance is not a spiritual achievement and it is not a surrender. It is a weather that comes and goes, and you are not being graded on it.

What I want to talk about is the crate. The forty minutes. The part with no audience.

Because that is precisely the ground Isaiah 46 stands on. God is speaking to people who are tired, and the picture He uses is not a rescue. It is a carry.

And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.Isaiah 46:4

Read what He puts in that sentence. Made. Bear. Carry. Deliver. Four verbs, and three of them are the unglamorous ones. Delivering is the one everybody quotes. Bearing and carrying are the two He spends most of the verse on, and they are what a man does every single morning for years with nothing to show for it at the end of the week.

You are carried by God through the part of the day nobody watches, and the six things are not a defeat. Isaiah 46:4 puts the carrying on Him and not on your stamina, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an old written line like that press into a real Tuesday morning. That is not an encouragement I invented for you. It is what He said about Himself.

What He said He made

There is a word before the carrying and it is the one people skip. I have made.

The same hands that carry you are the hands that made you, and the making came first. That order matters, because the fear in a hidden routine is almost never about the routine. It is about what the routine seems to say. That you are a maintenance case. That you began as one thing and have quietly become a smaller thing that has to be handled. That somewhere between then and now you slipped from being a person into being a system.

Isaiah 46:4 says the opposite, and it says it in the one place God could have made it optional and did not. He does not say I will carry the wreck of what you were. He says I have made, and I will bear. The making and the bearing are the same voice, the same hands, one continuous work, and no part of it has been downgraded.

You have a dignity in the half dark that no one has to witness in order for it to be real. What is written in Isaiah 46:4 was written about the hoar hairs and the long haul, and the same Spirit who inspired that line is the one sitting with you on the crate at twenty past six.

And notice: God does not congratulate them for coping. He does not say, look how well you are managing. He says I am He. He puts Himself in the sentence, not their performance. The subject of every verb is God.

You were made on purpose, and the order you keep in the morning did not change the reason you were made. The word says He made and He bears, the Spirit of God is the one carrying that word into your kitchen, and nothing about your routine has demoted you in the room where it counts.

The breakthrough

I have to hand you both halves of this at once, because either one on its own does damage.

God heals. Scripture says He does, the Holy Spirit still carries that word into bodies, and I am not going to trim it down to something safe so that no one is ever disappointed in me. And I am not going to promise you a result. Not a date, not an outcome, not a morning when the six things are down to two. That promise is not mine to make. We flip the switch; He sends the current, and the current is His. A page that guarantees you something has taken something from you and called it a gift.

So the turn here is not that the order goes away. The turn is who is in the room while you keep it.

The six things stop being a private arrangement you have made with your own body and become something done in company. The counting on the crate happens in front of Somebody. The fan turning twice happens in front of Somebody. And a man who is being carried is not a man who is coping.

Right now, as you read this, you are borne up by the God who made you, and the ordinary morning is exactly where that word is aimed. Isaiah 46:4 was written for hoar hairs and long roads, not for spectacular days, and the Spirit of God has never been bored by anybody's routine.

Declare this over yourself

You have the standing to say these out loud because Christ is in you, and the ground under them is Scripture and not how well you kept the order this week. The Holy Spirit carries these words, not the strength left in your voice at this hour. And what God does with this body is His to decide; nothing here dates a result or promises you one.

  1. Six things before the key turns, you are not a defeat and you are not a shame I keep in the dark. Isaiah 46:4 says He made me and He bears me, and He has watched every one of you get done. I am doing you again tomorrow with the shutter at chest height.
  2. Word I use about myself at the shutter, get out of this shop in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is not carrying a maintenance case, He is carrying a man God made on purpose, and His word takes that carrying all the way to the hoar hairs. Get out, and stay out of my counting.
  3. Almighty God, You are the One who made me and bears me and says the carrying goes the whole distance. Your Spirit is in this shop before the street is, and Your word has read every one of the six things nobody else has ever seen. Whatever You do with this body, I am lifting the shutter with You in the morning.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
