Daily CarriedPsalm 121:3

The Coat on the Back of Her Chair

This message is for the third day of the same conference every year, when you put your coat on at the five twenty break and go back to your room because the evening session is more than your body has, and in nine years you have never told one person why you leave

Her coat goes over the back of the chair at lunchtime, and it stays there all afternoon, and that is not because the room is cold.

Third day of the conference, the same one she comes to every year, in the same hotel with the carpet that swallows sound and the signs on easels pointing everybody toward halls with letters instead of names. The afternoon session runs until five twenty. The evening session starts at seven. In between there is the thing everybody actually comes for: the tables in the courtyard, the long dinner, somebody's guitar, the part where people stay talking until the staff start stacking chairs around them.

At five twenty she stands up, takes the coat off the back of the chair, and puts it on while people are still saying goodbye to each other. She smiles at the woman she has sat beside for three days. She says something light and true about how good the last hour was. She walks the long carpet to the elevator with her lanyard still on, and she goes up, and she does not come back down.

That has happened nine years running. Nine.

And here is the part she has never said to one person in nine years, not to the woman beside her, not to the friend who once asked outright and got a joke back. She does not leave because she is tired in the way the rest of them are tired. She leaves because the evening is more than her body has, and it has been more than her body has for a long time, and there is no drama in it and no crisis and no story anybody would ask a question about. There is just an amount, and she knows exactly what it is, and she spends it carefully, and she pays for the whole of the next day if she gets it wrong.

The coat goes on the chair at lunchtime because she has already decided by lunchtime. That is the detail that gets her, when she thinks about it in the elevator. She had already decided.

That is you, perhaps, with your own version of the coat. Your own five twenty. Your own arithmetic nobody has ever seen, done every morning before you are properly awake, about what today can hold. And you have never told a soul, because it is not a crisis and it is not a story, and you have quietly come to believe that a life like that is not the kind of life anybody, including God, gets particularly interested in.

The part nobody schedules

Let me say the ordinary thing first, plainly. The people who help you manage this are a gift and nothing on this page competes with them. Keep the appointments. Take what you have been given to take. Nothing here asks you to trade care for prayer, and nobody honest would.

Now the thing about a conference, or a church, or almost anything else built for people: it is built around its loud hours. The main session. The moment at the front. The story with a before and an after that somebody can tell from a stage in nine minutes flat.

And your life happens in the other hours. The five twenty. The Tuesday. The two hours after the thing that everyone else does not need. That is not a smaller life and it is not a delayed one, but it is quieter, and quiet gets read as absent, and eventually a person starts reading her own life the same way everybody else reads it.

So I want to hand you a psalm that was never written about a stage.

Psalm 121 is a walking song. It belongs to a stack of psalms people sang on a road, on foot, going up, and the hazard it names is not a dramatic one. It is the ankle. It is uneven ground. It is the ordinary mechanics of a body getting through a day:

He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.Psalm 121:3

Read what it actually promises to attend to. Your footing. The bit of you nobody applauds and nobody photographs. You are kept in the ordinary hours, and you were kept in them before anybody noticed there was anything to keep. That is not my encouragement to you. Psalm 121:3 says the One keeping you does not slumber, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a line sung on a road by walking people and lays it across a hotel hallway at five twenty.

A keeper who does not doze at the boring part

There is something almost funny in that verse if you sit with it. The psalm bothers to say that He does not fall asleep. Which means somebody, once, walking that road, worried that He might, and the psalm did not scold them for it. It answered them.

And it answered them about the dull stretch. Anyone can imagine God alert during the emergency. The question underneath your nine years is whether He is alert during the part with no emergency in it at all, the long flat middle where nothing is happening except that it costs you something every single day.

He is. You have a Keeper who does not doze through the part of your week that nobody would ever put on a stage. It is written in Psalm 121:3, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps that awake in a person rather than the strength of anybody's own footing.

Now let me hold both halves of what this site says, in one breath, because half of it on its own turns into a lie in either direction.

God heals. He heals bodies, He has done it, He does it, and this domain would not exist if we were embarrassed to say so.

And I do not promise you the result. Not the timing, not the shape of it, not that next year the coat stays on the chair through dinner. I cannot and I will not. We say what He has said and we leave the current to Him, and both of those are true in the same sentence.

Which means I am not going to do the thing that gets done to you. I am not going to tell you that this has gone on so long it must be a faith problem, because that is a sentence people invent when they want the arithmetic to make sense and it does not make sense. Nothing about your nine years is a shortage of enough faith. And I am not going to hand you acceptance as the goal either, as though the finish line were you finally agreeing to want less. Wanting more is not rebellion. You can want your body back and be at peace in the same afternoon, and there is nothing dishonest in holding both.

And one thing more, and I would rather say it and not need it. If the arithmetic has taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself feeling like the room would run more smoothly without you in it, tell one living human being today rather than tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you tonight. A page cannot be that person. You deserve a person.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true at five twenty, with the lanyard still on and the elevator coming.

You are not on hold, and this stretch of your life is not a waiting room outside your real one. Psalm 121 has the Keeper watching the going out and the coming in, which is the language of ordinary movement rather than of a crisis, and it is His Spirit who makes that land in a body that has already done its arithmetic today.

I am not promising you what the next year does. I am saying it here rather than at the bottom in small print, because this is the hottest part of the page and it is exactly where a promise would be easiest to make and would do the most damage. He heals, and the result is His, and both stay true tonight and both stay true if nothing changes by next year's conference.

You have dignity that was never issued to you by an evening session, and it is already yours in Christ before you spend a single unit of today. It is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a written line live in an elevator, and it does not require you to explain the coat to anybody.

Declare this over yourself

Now say these out loud, wherever you are, with your hands still where they were. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you, and the authority in them is His and not yours by nature, given to you in Him and never earned by a good day or a productive year. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit carries the words, not the volume you manage. What God does with this body is His to decide, and I say all three of these under that, and nothing here promises you a result or puts a date on one. What is settled is that the One keeping you does not sleep through the quiet part.

  1. Coat over the back of my chair, you are an honest measurement and you are not a verdict on my life. Psalm 121:3 says the One keeping me does not slumber, and He is awake through every hour I am not in the room for.
  2. Conclusion I came to in year four, get off me in the name of Jesus. You have been telling me that a quiet life is a life heaven loses interest in. It is written that the One who keeps me neither slumbers nor sleeps, and His Spirit is the one who keeps that awake in me at five twenty and at three in the morning.
  3. Lord, You are keeping me in the ordinary hours and You do not doze through the flat part of my week. Your Spirit holds what Your word said in Psalm 121 over me, not the strength of my own footing, and what You do with this body is Yours to decide. I am doing the next ordinary thing today with Your name over it and my head up.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
