It is the plain one. The default. The little marimba thing that comes with the phone and nobody ever bothers to change, and he never bothered either.
Wednesday evening, the good kind. Rice on, window open, the neighbor's dog making an idiot of itself at somebody walking past. His daughter is at the table with her books spread out and one shoe off. His wife is telling a story about a woman at work who has opinions about everybody's lunch, and it is genuinely funny, and he is laughing, and he is holding a wet dish and a towel.
Then the phone on the counter goes off. That sound. Those exact eleven notes.
And he is in the hallway.
That is the whole event and it is over in three seconds. He does not remember standing up. He does not remember putting the dish down, though the dish is on the counter and not on the floor, so at some point he must have. He is just in the hallway with one hand flat on the doorframe, facing the front door, with his heart going like he ran up stairs.
His daughter says, without looking up, Papi, it is my alarm. I set it for the thing at eight.
So he comes back in and everybody laughs, including him, and it is a good laugh and a real one, and the dish gets dried, and the story about the woman at work gets finished. Nobody makes anything of it.
The calls ended eleven months ago. That whole season closed. The thing that had to be waited on got waited on, the phone stopped being a threat, life came back and it is genuinely good, and here he is in his own hallway at half past six in the evening because a piece of plastic on the counter made a noise.
Later, on the edge of the bed with one sock on, he thinks something he does not say out loud. There is no appointment for this. Nobody is ever going to scan for it, nobody is going to ask about it, and there is no letter coming about the part of him that learned to stand up before it knew why.
That is you, perhaps, in your own hallway. Something ended and you did not. The season is over on paper and something inside you did not get the memo, and because the crisis part is finished you have decided this last bit is not worth mentioning to anybody, least of all to God.
Nobody is going to scan for this
Let me name it plainly, because I think it has gone unnamed in you for eleven months and unnamed things get heavy.
Something happened to you. Not only to your body. To you. The season did work on the person: it taught your body to jump before your mind arrives, it taught you to read a face the second somebody walks in, it made a certain hour of the night into a place, and it left you flinching at eleven notes of a marimba a year after there is nothing at the other end. That is not weakness and it is not a character flaw. That is what happens to a person who lived on alert for months. Your nervous system learned something and it learned it well, because it was trying to protect you.
Now hear how God handles a person in that condition, and read it slowly, because the picture is more careful than most of the things you have been told.
A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.Isaiah 42:3
A bruised reed. Not a snapped one, not a healthy one. A reed with the damage inside it, still standing, still doing the job, and nobody looking at it from the outside would necessarily know. And a smoking flax, a wick that has gone down to a thread of smoke, the kind anybody would pinch out and replace without thinking twice about it. That is the pair God chose to describe how He is with people, and He said what He does with both. He does not break the one and He does not put the other out.
You are the bruised reed in that sentence and not the exception to it. Isaiah 42:3 is not a poem about somebody more damaged than you or somebody less. It is written about exactly this, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a line about a reed and a wick and lays it against a man standing in his own hallway with his hand on the frame.
You have not been handled roughly by God in any of this, and He has not once been impatient with the parts of you that are slow to come back. It is written that He will not break the reed, and His Spirit is the One who has been doing something in you gently enough that you did not notice it as work.
This is added, and it is not instead
Now I have to say the thing this category exists to say, and I want it said clearly enough that nobody could mistake it.
Healing in the person is not a consolation prize. It is not the thing we hand you because the other thing did not happen. I am not going to quietly redefine what you asked God for so that you can be told you got it, and if anybody has done that to you, gently, kindly, with a hand on your arm, then they did you harm and they probably meant well.
This is additional. That is the whole word for it. God heals bodies. He is a healer, He heals bodies, that is His character and His written word and not a rumor, and this site was built to say it out loud rather than mumble it. And I do not promise you the result. I cannot and I will not, and no honest voice can. We say what He has said, and we leave the current to Him. What I am telling you today is that alongside all of that, not instead of any of it, there is a work He does in the person, and you are allowed to want both and to ask for both without one being a trade for the other.
And whatever you do, keep going to your appointments and take what you are given. God is not in competition with the people looking after your body, and He never has been.
Here is the pit, and it is a quiet one. You have decided the inside part does not count. The crisis is over, other people had it worse, the thing you actually feared did not happen or did happen and is now behind you, and so the flinching in the hallway gets filed under being dramatic. Nobody failed to have enough faith here, and nobody is being dramatic either. That sentence is not in the book and it is not true. A reed that is bruised is not a reed that is complaining.
You have a real injury in a place no test looks at, and it is not too small to bring. Isaiah 42:3 puts the smoking flax under the same care as everything else, and it is His Spirit at work in the part of you nobody is ever going to scan.
And one more thing, plainly, because I mean it. If any of this has taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking your family would breathe easier without you around, tell one human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you tonight. A page cannot do that job. You deserve a person in the room, and reaching for them is not a burden you are laying on anybody.
So here is what is true, in the kitchen, with the dish dried and everybody laughing.
You are being made whole in the place the scan does not reach, and that work started before you gave it a name. It is written that the bruised reed He does not break and the smoking flax He does not quench, and the Holy Spirit is the One carrying that word into a hallway at half past six in the evening, and it lands on the man with his hand on the doorframe.
I said it above and I will say it again right here where it is warmest, because this is exactly where a promise would be easiest and least honest. God heals, and I do not promise you the result, and none of this healing in the person is offered to you instead of anything. It is offered alongside, and you may ask for all of it.
You have permission to bring the small thing, and the small thing was never small to Him. That is what the word does with an injury nobody can see. It does not rank it. His Spirit is the One who makes a sentence said out loud in a bedroom into an actual handing over.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, sitting down, in your own voice. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you and the authority is His, delegated to you and not earned by how well you have coped. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the One who carries them, not the strength you say them with. What God does with this body is His to decide, and nothing here promises a result or dates one, and nothing here is offered to you in place of anything you have asked Him for. What is settled is how He handles a bruised reed.
- Ringtone I never changed, you are a sound and not a summons, and you have no authority to move me out of my own kitchen. Isaiah 42:3 says a bruised reed shall he not break, and God has not been rough with what those months left in me.
- Suspicion that this part of me does not count, you are a lie with a very quiet voice, and I put you out of this house in the name of Jesus. It is written that the smoking flax He does not quench, and it is His Spirit at work in the place no machine ever looks at.
- Lord, You are working in the part of me that no test reaches, and You have never once called it a small thing. I am naming out loud today what those months did to me, and I am handing You that one thing by name. Your Spirit is the One doing this, and I am staying in the room.
