She used to say it right out loud in this kitchen, with her hands in the dishwater and the radio off, and she could not tell you the month she stopped.
That is the part that gets her. Not the stopping. The not knowing when. If somebody had asked her in the fifth year she would have said of course I still pray about that, and she would have believed it, and she would have been about half right. It went the way a path goes back to grass. Nobody decides. One season you notice you have been walking around it.
The kitchen is the same. Window over the sink looking at the same three trees. The dish towel on the same nail by the door frame, which has been in that spot since her husband put the nail in wrong and they left it. The radio on the shelf that she does not turn on when she washes up, because she used to want the quiet in here for a reason.
Now what happens is this. She goes past the sink and there is a thought, and the thought has the shape of the old sentence. It goes through her in about a second and a half and then she is on to the mail or the stove. And she has told herself, more than once, that thinking it counts. Which is true. God is not deaf to a thought and I am not going to pretend otherwise.
But here is the tell, and she knows it, which is why she is reading this. She does not believe herself when she says it. She says thinking counts in the voice of somebody settling out of court.
That is you, perhaps, in your own kitchen. Or your own truck, or the last five minutes before you sleep. You could not name the month either. And somewhere in you there is a low idea that you are the one who let it drop, and that coming back to it now would require an explanation you have not got.
Read the verse for what it does not require
I am going to give you a verse, and I want you to notice the doors it does not put in front of you.
The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.Psalm 145:18
All them that call upon him. Not all them that have called upon him consistently. Not all them that never let it lapse. There is no clause about how long it has been and there is no clause about how you left. The verse names one condition and it is happening in the present tense: calling. That is it. If you call, He is near, and He is near the same way to the woman who never stopped and the woman who has not said it out loud since a spring she cannot place.
You are one sentence from near, and there is no distance to make up first. Psalm 145:18 is where that is written, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a psalm and makes it true at a sink rather than true in general.
Now look at the second half, because that is the one people use as a fence. In truth. I have heard that turned into a demand for feeling, as though God wants your old fervor back before He will count it. That is not what the words are doing. To call in truth is to call without pretending. It is the opposite of theater.
And do you see what that makes of your last few years? You stopped saying it out loud because you could not say it the old way and mean it. That is not unbelief. That is a person who would rather go quiet than perform. Scripture does not scold that woman. The one thing the verse asks for is exactly the thing she was protecting.
Nothing is owed at the door
Now the pit, and I want to name it plainly, because I think it is the whole thing keeping you at the mail instead of at the sink.
You believe there is a fee at the door. Not in those words. It shows up as a feeling that before you can bring this up again, you would have to account for the gap. Explain yourself. Apologize for the years. And worse than that, promise. Promise that this time you will keep it up, that you will not let it go quiet again, that this one is permanent.
Nobody asked you for that. Not God, not this page, not me. There is no promise required for you to open your mouth about this tonight, and if you say one sentence at the sink and then nothing for another year, that sentence still stood and He was still near it. I will not put a condition on the end of this that Scripture did not put there.
And the silence was not an offense. Say that with me plainly: the quiet years were not held against you. There is no ledger with a gap in it and no note in a margin about the woman who stopped. Nobody in this kitchen failed to have enough faith. That sentence is not in the book and it is not true, and I will not have it said over a woman who went quiet because she would not fake it.
You have a subject that God never closed, and it stayed open the whole time it was not being spoken about. Psalm 145:18 has no time limit anywhere in it, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old subject live again in your mouth without you having to work up to it.
God heals. I say it on every page and I say it here: He heals bodies, He has not changed, and this subject you set down is not a subject He got tired of.
And I do not promise you the result, tonight or ever, and I am saying that in the same breath because that is the only honest way to say either one. What He does with this is His. Coming back to the asking is not a transaction and it does not put anything on account. It is a woman talking to God at her own sink about something that has always mattered to her.
And one more thing, said plain, because I mean it. If the quiet has taken you somewhere darker than tired, if some part of you has caught itself thinking the house would run easier without you in it, tell a living human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988 and a person answers. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can stand in that kitchen with you tonight. A page cannot do that. A person can, and you deserve one.
So here is the turn, and it is the last thing I have got, and I think it is the whole of it.
You were not filed away, and there is no record anywhere of a woman who quit. Psalm 145:18 puts the Lord near everybody who calls, without a single qualifier about their history, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that fact land in a body that has been braced for a reckoning.
God heals, and I do not promise you the result, and I hold both of them out to you right here, because this is where a promise would be easiest to make and hardest to take back.
The idea that you owe an explanation has no right to stay in this kitchen. It walked in on its own and it has kept you at the mail instead of the sink, and it is written in Psalm 145:18 that He is near to all them that call, and it is the Spirit who makes a written sentence stronger than a low idea you have carried for years.
Right now, as you read this, you have permission to bring this up again, and it costs you nothing to be here. That is what Psalm 145:18 opens, it is His Spirit who makes it real rather than merely reasonable, and there is no promise attached to it about tomorrow.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud at the sink, with the water running or not. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you, and the authority is His, handed to you in Him and not earned by consistency. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit carries the words rather than the confidence in your voice. What God does with this body is His to decide, and every line here is said under that, and nothing on this page promises you a result or dates one, and nothing here asks you to promise anything about tomorrow. What is settled is that He is near the one who calls, tonight, without conditions about the years.
- Kitchen sink under the window, you are where I used to say it out loud, and you are not a courtroom. Psalm 145:18 says the LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, and there is no clause in it about how long it has been.
- Notion that I got filed as one who quit, get out, in the name of Jesus. It is written that He is nigh unto all them that call upon Him in truth, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that into my kitchen, so the quiet years were not held against me and I am saying it out loud tonight.
- Lord, You never closed this subject and You are near me while I say it, and I am naming it to You out loud once, at this sink, after all this time. I thank You that Your Spirit closes the distance I was about to try to walk myself, and the result is Yours and I do not promise it to myself, and I am not promising You tomorrow either, because You did not ask me for it.
