Peace While WaitingIsaiah 41:10

The Window at the End of the Fourth Floor

This message is for two in the morning on a night shift, working in a building made entirely of other people's results, with your own sample gone off on Tuesday and nobody calling until next week, checking a phone forty times a night that you already know is not going to ring

Two in the morning is the quietest hour in a building that never actually closes.

She has her cart parked outside 407 and the floor buffer left downstairs because you do not run a buffer at two. Eleven years she has cleaned this hall. She knows which door sticks, which light hums, which family always leaves a coat behind. Down at the desk there are two people talking in the voice everybody uses at night, the one that is really just a shape of a voice, and a printer somewhere doing its work in the dark.

And every single thing in this building is somebody's result. That is what the building is for. Behind every door on this hall a person is waiting on a word about a body, and she walks past all of them with a bottle of cleaner and a cloth, and she is good to them, and she remembers their names.

Her break is ten minutes and she takes it at the window at the end of the hall, because it is the only window on the floor that looks at nothing. A parking lot. Three lamps with moths going around them. A dumpster with a light over it. And past that the town, mostly asleep, one set of headlights crossing the bridge.

She takes the phone out of her apron pocket.

Nothing. No missed call. Of course there is not. Nobody in the world calls at two in the morning with news about a sample that went off on Tuesday, and she knows that, and she has known it every night this week, and she has still put her hand in that apron forty times a night, and every single time, in the half second between the pocket and the screen, her whole chest does the thing.

Then she puts it back and stands there, and the film starts. She has seen it twelve times now. She knows what the room looks like and where she sits and what the first sentence sounds like. She has already told her son in her head. She has already picked out what she would wear. She has already worked out who she would call first and what she would say and what she would not say, and she has done all of it standing at a window looking at a dumpster with a light over it, at two in the morning, on a Wednesday, about a phone call that has not come and may not say that at all.

That is you, perhaps, at your own window, on your own break, with your own week to get through. And here is the thing nobody says out loud about the rehearsing: you are not doing it because you are morbid. You are doing it because some part of you believes that if you live it enough times in advance, it will not be able to take the top of your head off when it lands. That is the arrangement. And nobody has ever told you that the arrangement does not work.

The film at two in the morning

Let me say the kind thing first, because it is also the true thing. That rehearsing is not a sin and it is not weak and it is not a lack of anything. It is a tired mind trying to protect you the only way it knows how. Nobody is going to be told off on this page for what their head does at two in the morning.

But I am going to tell you what it costs, because somebody should, and gently. Rehearsing does not spread the weight out over the week. It multiplies it. You do not live it once, you live it twelve times, and eleven of those times are about a call that has not happened and might never say the thing you are practicing for. The bill comes in either way, and you have already paid it eleven times over before anybody has dialed.

And here is the deeper thing, the one that actually hurts. When you rehearse, you are the only one in the room. That is the whole design of it: you are down there at the bottom of a version of the future by yourself, working out who to call, and God is not in the scene, because you did not put Him in it. You cannot rehearse being held. You can only be held, and it happens in real time, in real hallways, in the actual two in the morning that you are standing in.

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.Isaiah 41:10

Read what He says there and read what He does not say. Not one syllable of that verse is a forecast. He does not tell them the empire is going away. He does not tell them the news is good. Isaiah is speaking to a people staring straight at a thing that was actually coming, and God does not hand them a prediction. He hands them Himself, and then a hand, and the hand is His right one.

You are held tonight by a right hand that does not change grip depending on what the call says. That is Isaiah 41:10 written down, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a promise spoken over exiles and lays it on a woman standing in a corridor with a cloth in her back pocket.

What He will not tell you, and what I will not either

Now let me be straight with you about what this page can and cannot do, because a page with a name like this one has to be careful with you.

God heals. I say it plainly. He heals bodies, Scripture is not shy about it, and I am not going to whisper it because you are having a hard week. And in the same breath: I do not promise you the result. Not the call, not the body, not any part of it. I do not know what that call says. I am not going to guess for you in either direction, not the hopeful guess and not the grim one, because both of them are me making something up and handing it to a frightened woman at two in the morning as if it came from heaven. We say what He said, we leave the current to Him, and I will not pretend I have a forecast when what I have is a hand.

Which means, and hear this, that if the news comes back and it is the other kind, nothing on this page falls over. Not one line. The hand is the same hand. And it will not be because you rehearsed wrong, or hoped wrong, or did not hope enough, or missed a word somewhere. Nobody failed to have enough faith here. That accusation is not in the book and I will not have it laid on you in a hallway at two in the morning.

You have a God who came into the actual hour instead of sending you a prediction about it. That is what it is written means when Isaiah says fear thou not, for I am with thee, and the Spirit He gave you is the one who makes with thee an experience and not a theory.

And one more thing, because I mean it and I will not tuck it away at the bottom. If these nights have taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking that this hallway would run fine without you in it, tell one human being before you clock out. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your own local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you when you get home. A page cannot sit at a kitchen table with you. You deserve someone who can, and reaching for them is the strongest thing you could do tonight.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true on the fourth floor, right now, at two eleven in the morning.

The waiting is not empty. It looks empty because nothing is happening in it, but a room where God is present is not an empty room, and that hallway has never once been a hallway He was not in.

You have this hour, and He is in it, and He was in it before you clocked on. Isaiah 41:10 is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes I am with thee out of the past tense of a scroll and puts it in the present tense of a corridor.

The rehearsing can stop. Not because you have mastered your mind, and not because you are strong tonight, and not by an act of will at two in the morning, which is the worst hour in the world for acts of will. It stops the way a fire goes out when nobody is feeding it. Every time the film starts, you say the line instead. That is all. You are swapping one voice in the room for another one, and you have the better voice written down.

Right now, as you read, the hand under you is the right hand of His righteousness, and it does not adjust its grip for news. That is written, and it is the same Spirit who steadied a whole people looking straight at something real.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, at the window, in the parking lot, in the car before you drive home. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you, and the authority is His and never yours, delegated and not achieved on a good night. Scripture is the ground under all three and the Holy Spirit carries them, not the firmness of your voice. What God does with this body and what that call says are His to decide, I speak every line under that, and nothing on this page promises you a result or dates one. What is settled is that the hand under you does not move.

  1. Phone in my apron pocket, you are a piece of glass and you are not the hand I am held by. Isaiah 41:10 says His right hand is the one upholding me, and I am putting you face down until you ring.
  2. Superstition that rehearsing it keeps me safe, get out of this hallway in the name of Jesus. It is written that I am upheld by the right hand of His righteousness, and it is His Spirit who steadies me at two in the morning and not a film I run twelve times in my own head.
  3. Lord, You are with me on the fourth floor tonight and You already know what that call says, and I am not sitting in it alone. I thank You that Your hand is under me whichever way the week goes, and I am putting the phone face down and finishing my round.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
