The laminator is still warm, and that is the reason she gives herself for staying.
Twenty to five. The last parent went out through the front doors at four fifteen with a child under each arm and a science project balanced on top, and the building did that thing buildings do when the last person leaves: it got about ten degrees quieter than empty. The sign in book is open on the counter with the day's names in it, most of them hers because she signs everybody in. The lost and found bin by the door has one lunchbox, three sweaters and a single sneaker that has been in there since February. Two small chairs sit outside the principal's office where the small chairs always sit.
Somewhere down the hall a floor buffer starts up, and then stops.
Her phone is on the desk, face down, next to the laminating pouches. It has been face down for four days now. Not on silent. Face down, which is a different thing entirely, because silent is not wanting to hear it and face down is not wanting to see it light up, and she needs to hear it and cannot bear to watch for it, and there is no way to arrange a telephone that solves that.
The call is coming this week. That is all she was told. This week, and they cannot say which day, and there is no number she can dial that will make it come sooner. So she has spent four days doing an ordinary job in an ordinary building while some other part of her sat by that phone like a dog by a door.
And she has been rehearsing. This is the part she has told nobody. She has run the bad version of that conversation perhaps forty times now: the voice on the line, the pause before the words, what she says, whether she cries in the office or holds it to the parking lot, which sister she calls first, what she does about her mother. She has it word for word. She has staged it in the car, at the copier, in the shower. Some evenings she runs it twice.
So she stays. Because at home there is nothing between her and the rehearsal, and here there is a warm laminator and a bin of sweaters and the buffer down the hall.
That is you, perhaps, in your own version of this room. You know the exact day you were told to expect it and you know it could be any hour inside that. And you have staged the worst conversation of your life so many times that you could act it out with the lights off.
What the rehearsing is, and what it is not
First, let me take one thing off you before we go a step further.
The rehearsing is not a sin and it is not weak faith and it is certainly not the reason for anything. It is what a mind does when it is handed a threat and no date. Rehearsal is the imagination's honest attempt to prepare you for something it cannot actually prepare you for, and the reason it keeps running is not that you are faithless; it is that it never works, so it goes around again. Nobody failed to have enough faith here. That is not in the book, it is not true, and if some kind person has hinted at it this week, you may leave it in the lost and found on your way out.
But I will name plainly what it costs, because you already know: you have lived the bad version forty times, and if the call goes badly you will have lived it forty one times, and if it goes well you will have lived it forty times for nothing. Rehearsal charges you either way, in advance, and delivers nothing on the day.
Here is what was said to a room of people the night before the worst day of their lives.
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.John 14:27
Read where it sits. He said it hours before everything they were afraid of actually happened. He was not predicting a good outcome for that weekend. He was handing over something to hold while a genuinely terrible thing occurred.
You have a peace that was left with you before anything about this week was known. John 14:27 is written, it was written into the worst night there has ever been, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes what is written into something a person can actually feel in an empty office at twenty to five.
Not as the world gives
Now take the middle clause, because it is the whole difference and most of us have never been shown it.
The world gives peace on delivery. It hands it over with the good news and takes it back with the bad, which means what the world calls peace is really just relief, and relief has to wait for the phone. That is the peace you have been trying to reach all week and cannot, because it does not exist yet. It cannot exist until the call comes.
His is not that. His is given in advance, in a room where nothing has been settled, to people whose next day went badly. That is not a technicality. It is the entire reason this page can be honest with you: what I am putting in your hands works identically whichever way that call goes, because it was designed for people on the wrong side of the news.
You were given this peace by a Man who knew exactly what the next day held and handed it over anyway. That is written down, and His Spirit is the one who carries it into a building where the last person has gone home.
Now the two true things in one breath, because they belong together. God heals. He does it still, plainly, in bodies, today, and Scripture on that subject is not decoration. And I do not promise you an outcome, and I will not predict your call in either direction. Not the good one, which would be a lie dressed as encouragement, and not the bad one, which is what the rehearsal has been doing for four days. What He does with your body is His to decide, and He is good in either case, and this peace is in your hands before you know which case it is.
Rehearsal has no right to stay in the room where Christ has left His peace. It is written that He gave it, not as the world gives it, and His Spirit is in that room with you now, at four forty, with the buffer stopping down the hall.
And one thing more, said plainly. If this week has taken you somewhere darker than tired, if you have caught yourself thinking that everybody's life would be simpler without you in it, tell one human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can come and sit with you tonight. A page cannot sit in the office with you. You deserve a person, and there is nothing weak about wanting one.
So here is the turn, and it is smaller and stranger than relief.
You are not waiting for peace to arrive with the news. It is not coming on the phone. It was left with you, in advance, by Someone who knew what a bad day looks like from the inside, and it has been in the room the whole four days while you were watching the desk.
It is already yours, given and not promised, and no phone call has the standing to take back what Jesus left. John 14:27 is written and it does not have a clause about outcomes in it; the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps handing it to you, hour by hour, whether the building is full or empty.
Let not your heart be troubled is not a scolding. It is what you say to somebody when you have just put something in their hands.
Declare this over yourself
You have the standing to say these because Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you and not achieved by you. Every line rests on Scripture, which is what makes it authority instead of a hope; the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it, not the steadiness of your voice; and what God does with this body is His to decide, so nothing below predicts your call or promises you a result.
- Phone lying face down on this desk, you are a call I have not been given yet and you do not set the temperature in this room. John 14:27 says peace was left with me before any of this was known, and His Spirit is the one keeping it here at four forty in an empty building.
- Rehearsal I have run forty times in this office, get out, in the name of Jesus. I am a woman with peace already in her hands, handed over on the worst night there ever was, and I am not staging the bad version one more time tonight.
- Jesus, You left Your peace with people whose next day went badly, and You did not make it conditional on the news. Your word says You give it not as the world gives, and Your Spirit is holding it in this room right now. So I am turning the phone face up, switching off the light, and going home in the peace You left me.
