What God SaysProverbs 4:22

The Shelf Above the Ovens

This message is for I have read the letter so many times I can say it in the dark, and I cannot remember one line of what God has said about my body. I want His word to be as loud in me as that page is.

Nabil sweeps at ten past nine, when the street has gone quiet and the ovens have stopped their loud work and settled into ticking. The flour goes ahead of the broom in a soft pale wave, over the tiles, around the leg of the cooling rack, out toward the step. He likes this part of the night. It is the one part of the day when nobody is watching him do anything.

The letter is in his apron pocket. It has been there for eleven days. The paper has gone soft along the fold, the way paper goes soft when a man takes it into the storeroom, opens it, reads it, folds it and puts it back four or five times before noon. He does not need to open it now. He could say it out loud over the flour if he wanted to, and some nights, sweeping, he almost does.

Above the ovens there is a shelf. On that shelf sit the big tray he uses twice a year, a can of the good cinnamon, and his father's Bible with the split spine and the tea ring on the cover. That book has been up there for nine years, and for most weeks of those nine years he has taken it down. He has not taken it down since the eleventh of the month.

It is not anger. That is what he would tell you if you asked him, and he would be telling the truth. He is not angry with God. He is only aware, in a way he cannot set down anywhere, that there is one page he can recite perfectly and another page he can no longer begin. One of them is in his pocket, warm from his own body. The other is over his head in the dark, going white with flour dust.

He sweeps the last of it out onto the step and stands there a moment with the broom, looking at the street. Then he comes back in, and he looks up at the shelf, and he does not reach.

That is you, perhaps. Not angry. Just eleven days into knowing one page by heart and forgetting there was ever another one.

The page you can say by heart

A letter about your body is built to be remembered. It is short. It is exact. It uses the same small handful of words every time it is opened and it never wanders off the point. Somebody trained for years to write it that way and they wrote it well, and I will not say one word against them, because the people caring for your body are not your enemy and God has never been in competition with them. Keep your appointments. Take what has been given to you. Nothing on this page asks you to put down the care that has been put into your hands.

But look at what those eleven days have done to your memory. Eleven days, and the letter can be recited in the dark. Eleven days, and the other page, the one that was in the house before the ovens were, has gone silent. That is not rebellion and it is not a spiritual failure. It is what a frightened mind does. It rehearses the thing it is afraid of, because rehearsing feels a great deal like preparing.

Solomon gave his son a father's answer to that. Attend to my words, he said. Do not let them out of your sight. Keep them in the middle of your heart. And then he told the boy what those words are actually for.

For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.Proverbs 4:22

Life unto those that find them. Not to those who deserve them. Not to those who can produce the right feeling about them on a bad night. To those who find them, which is a sentence about eyes and hands and a shelf, and not a sentence about how strong anybody's belief was on the eleventh of the month.

You are holding a word over this body that is older than the letter in your pocket, and it has not gone quiet, it has only gone unread. Proverbs 4:22 is where that comes from, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a written line off a page and into a living body. The sentence is not mine. The power in it was never in the sound of my voice or of yours.

Notice what the verse does not do, as well. It does not hand you a date. It does not tell you how the week goes. It says what His words are: life, and health, and all the flesh, which is the whole man and not a favored part of him. A promise about what the word IS is a very different animal from a promise about what your Thursday looks like, and the first one is the one God actually made.

The shelf is not far away

The distance from where Nabil is standing to his father's Bible is one step and a raised arm. He has crossed it a thousand times carrying trays. Tonight it may as well be across the city, and both of us know why.

Opening the book means letting God speak into the same room the letter is in. As long as the shelf stays untouched, the letter is the only voice in the bakery, and at least the letter is a known quantity. He has already survived it eleven times a day. Reaching up is a risk of a different kind. It invites a second voice into a room a man has finally got quiet.

And there is a second reason, and it is uglier, and somebody probably put it in him without meaning to. Somewhere along the way he heard that a person who is not getting an answer must be short of something. More belief. Better words. Fewer doubts on a Tuesday. So the book on the shelf stopped being bread and started being a test he was afraid of failing. Let me say this as plainly as I know how: nobody in this story lacked enough faith, that sentence is not in the book, and it is not true. It is a cruelty with a verse taped to the front of it. Put it down.

You have His word within arm's reach tonight, and it asks you to feel nothing in particular before you open it. What is written is written whether the reader is steady or shaking, and the Spirit who breathed it is the same Spirit standing in a bakery at ten past nine beside a man holding a broom.

That is the mercy in the way God chose to speak. He put it in writing. He did not leave it to a mood, a memory, or a good night's sleep. A word you can hold in your hands is a word that survives the days when you cannot hold anything.

You were given this word for the eleventh day, and not only for the good ones. He promised health to all their flesh in Proverbs 4:22, and He said it to people who would go on to have hard months, and the Holy Spirit has never once refused to breathe on that line because somebody read it with an unsteady voice.

The breakthrough

Here is where I have to be careful with you, and I would rather be careful than warm.

God heals. That is not a rumor and it is not a figure of speech. Scripture says His words are life and health to all the flesh of the one who finds them, the Holy Spirit still carries that word into bodies, and I have no interest in shrinking it so that I sound more reasonable. And I am not going to promise you a result. Not a date, not an outcome, not a version of your week. That promise is not mine to make, and a page that promises what it cannot keep is a cruelty dressed up as comfort. We flip the switch. He sends the current. Both halves of that are true in the same breath and neither one weakens the other.

So the breakthrough tonight is not a result. It is a reach. It is the moment a man who has been living inside one page decides the other page gets a hearing too, and puts his hand up toward a shelf with flour still on his fingers.

Right now, as you read this, the word over your body sits nearer than the letter in your pocket, because His word was in your house before the news was. The Holy Spirit is not waiting for you to sound convincing. He is waiting for the book to be open.

Declare this over yourself

You have the standing to say these out loud because Christ is in you, and the ground under them is Scripture and not the strength of your own certainty tonight. The Holy Spirit carries these words, not the volume of your voice. And what God does with this body is His to decide; nothing here dates a result or promises you one.

  1. Letter in my apron pocket, you are a page and you are not a verdict. Proverbs 4:22 says His words are health to all my flesh, and that word was in this house before you were. I am taking you out of my pocket and setting you down under a word that outlives you.
  2. Conclusion I came to on the eleventh day, get out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus. I am a man the Holy Spirit teaches, and the book above the ovens is mine to take down tonight with flour still on my hands. Get out, and take the test you invented with you.
  3. Father, You are the God who wrote health into Your word long before I ever read a page about my body. Your Spirit is lifting that book off the shelf with me, and Proverbs 4:22 is going out loud over the tiles and the cooling racks. Whatever You do with this body, I am reading it before I turn out the light.
