The Light Under That Door

There is a board on the landing that creaks, the third one from the top of the stairs, and she has known exactly where it is for eleven years and she steps over it without thinking about it any more.

Eleven at night. The laundry basket is on the floor behind her because she picked it up an hour ago with every intention and then did not go anywhere with it. The hall light is off. The only light up here is the thin bar of it coming out from under the door in front of her, which means awake, and she cannot tell if awake is better or worse tonight.

Her hand is on the handle. It has been on the handle for a while now. She is not going to turn it. Going in means a conversation, and a conversation at eleven means neither of them sleeps, and she has learned that the hard way more than once.

So she stands there.

And she prays, if that is the word, which she is honestly not sure it is any more. It is mostly the name. She says the name in her head, over and over, and then she says the same three or four sentences she has said every night for two years, in the same order, because at some point they stopped being sentences and became something more like a shape her mouth makes.

The bar of light goes off.

She takes her hand off the handle and does not move. And the thought that arrives, the one she would never say to anyone in her house or her church or anywhere, is this: I do not know if any of this is doing anything. I have stood in this hallway maybe six hundred times. I could not tell you what has changed. I might just be a woman who stands in a hallway instead of sleeping.

That is you, perhaps, outside your own door, or on the phone, or three states away with the same three sentences. Not the one with the report. The one who would take it in a heartbeat if that were on offer. And somewhere in the last two years the standing quietly turned into a job with a result attached, and the result has not come, and you have been carrying that as though it were an account in your name.

Four men who could not get in either

There is a story about a door problem, and it is not usually read as one.

A man could not walk. Four of his people picked up the corners of what he lay on and carried him to the house where Jesus was teaching, and when they got there they could not get in. Too many people. No way through the doorway. And this is the verse:

And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.Mark 2:4

Read what those four actually did. They carried. They climbed. They took a roof apart with their hands, somebody else's roof, in front of a crowd, and lowered a grown man on ropes into a room where a teacher was mid sentence.

And then they stopped. That is the end of their part. The text does not have them saying anything, praying anything, or doing anything else. They got him in front of Jesus and their job description ran out.

You are one of the four, and their whole assignment was carrying, which is exactly what you have been doing in a hallway. Mark 2:4 is where that stands written, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a first century roof into a description of a woman with her hand on a handle at eleven at night, which is why the standing was never nothing.

What the roof did not buy

Now I have to be careful, because the very next verse is one of the most misused sentences in the Bible when it lands on a person in your position.

It says that when Jesus saw their faith, He spoke to the man. And that gets turned, constantly, into a lever: their faith produced it, therefore your faith produces it, therefore if it has not come, look at your faith. I want to take that apart in front of you, because it has almost certainly been running quietly against you.

Those four men had no technique. They had a friend, some rope, and a roof they were willing to break. Nothing they did healed anybody. They could not have. They carried a man across town and up a ladder and their hands did the last useful thing they were able to do when they let go of the ropes. What happened after that was entirely and only Jesus.

So hear this plainly. The outcome in that room is not on your shoulders and it never was. Nobody failed here. There is no version of your prayer, no better wording, no earlier hour, no longer stretch of it, that changes what God sovereignly does, and any teaching that tells you otherwise has made you into a machine and God into a vending slot, and it is not in the book. Six hundred nights in a hallway is not evidence of a deficiency. It is evidence of a person who kept carrying.

You were never handed the result, and you cannot be held to a thing that was never yours. It is written in Mark 2:5 that Jesus is the one who spoke, not the four on the roof, and it is His Spirit who does now what only He did then, which is precisely why the weight you have been carrying about this is not yours to carry.

And one more thing, said straight because I mean it. If two years of standing in this hallway has taken you somewhere darker than tired, if some part of you has stopped wanting to be here, tell a living human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988, at any hour. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who can sit with you tonight. And if it is the person behind that door who is in that kind of danger, the same number is for them and this is the night to say something out loud rather than wait for morning. A page cannot carry either of you. People can, and you both deserve them.

Standing in a hallway is not nothing

Here is what I think gets lost somewhere around night four hundred.

The four men did not get to see anything from the roof. They were up there, in the open, looking down through a hole they had made, with no idea what was about to be said. Everything that mattered happened below them and out of their hands. And Scripture keeps them in the story anyway. It names what they did. It records the carrying as part of the account and not as background to it.

Presence is not a lesser contribution than outcome. It is simply the part that belongs to a human being.

You have been present, and that is the whole thing that was ever asked of you. Galatians 6:2 says to bear one another's burdens and calls that fulfilling the law of Christ, which is a completed description and not a partial one, and it is the Spirit of God who does the part your hands were never built for.
