The lamp beside the couch has a shade that never sits straight, and she has stopped fixing it, and the light comes across the room at a slight angle because of it.
Twenty past ten. Mug on the arm of the couch, gone cold about forty minutes ago, a skin on the top of it now. The dishwasher has finished and made its noise and she has not gotten up. Her phone is in her hand because her phone is always in her hand, and she is in the notes, and the note she is in is the one she does not show anybody.
It has no title. It just starts.
She adds to it maybe once a month. Sometimes twice in a week and then nothing for a season. And tonight, for no reason she could name, she does the thing she has never done, which is put her thumb on the screen and drag it upward and keep dragging. Past this spring. Past the two lines from last winter. Past a stretch where there is nothing at all for nine months and then one line that just says please. Past the year she wrote the same three words eleven times. The screen dims and she taps it awake and keeps going.
And then the top of the note, and it stops moving, and there is the first line, and above the first line there is a date.
Six years.
She reads the first line. Then she scrolls back down to the bottom and reads the last line, the one she added a week ago. They are the same. Not similar. The same ask, in the same words, in the same order, six years apart, and every single thing in between is that ask again with the dates changed.
She sets the phone face down on her leg. She does not cry. It is far too old a thing to cry about, and that is its own kind of information.
That is you, perhaps, with your own note, or your own list, or nothing written down at all and only the number in your head, which is worse. You know how long. You know it to the season. And somewhere in the middle of those years the thing quietly stopped being a prayer and started being a file you keep, and you would not say that out loud to anybody.
The complaint God kept
I want to start somewhere that might surprise you, which is the fact that a note exactly like hers is in the Bible, and God is the one who put it there.
How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?Psalm 13:1
Four words. How long. And then he says it again in the next line, and again in the one after, and again after that: four times in two verses a man asks God how long, and nobody edits it out, and nobody adds a footnote underneath explaining what God was up to. It goes into the songbook of Israel exactly as it was said. They sang it. Out loud. Together, in public, on purpose, for centuries.
Sit with that for a second, because it changes what your note is.
The book that shapes everything we believe contains a song made entirely of an unanswered question, and it was preserved, copied by hand, carried across empires, translated into your language, and printed in the volume on your shelf, because God wanted that question kept. Not resolved. Kept.
You are holding a document that God has an entire genre for, and He did not throw a single one of them away. Psalm 13:1 is where it stands written, and it is the same Spirit who moved a man to ask how long who is in the room with a woman on a couch at twenty past ten, which is why this note is not the evidence against her that she has decided it is.
What I am not going to do with your six years
Here is what I will not do on this page, and I want you to know it before we go any further, because most of it has almost certainly been handed to you before.
I am not going to explain the delay. I do not know why. Nobody on this earth knows why, and every person who has told you why was guessing, and some of them were guessing with real love and it still did you damage. I am not going to assign your six years a purpose either, as though God were running a curriculum and the reading has fallen behind. And I am not going to tell you there is a key nobody ever handed you, a sin you cannot remember, a word you said wrong, a door you left open, or a thing you would have received by now if you had done it properly. That is a lie. It is not in the book, and it has broken more people in this exact position than almost anything else I know of.
Nobody here lacked enough faith. Six years of asking is not the behavior of a person who does not believe. It is the behavior of a person who does.
And I am not going to finish this page by quietly changing the subject, either. Some articles do that. They start with a body and end by redefining the word healing until it means something that has already happened, so the reader can be told they got what they asked for after all. You asked for a specific thing. It is still the thing you asked for. I am not going to swap it out under you while you are not looking.
You were not filed and forgotten, and there is no line you fell out of. Psalm 139 says He is already in the place you have not gone yet and His hand is there ahead of you, and His Spirit is the one who makes that a present fact and not a nice thought, which is why this room is not as empty as it has felt for six years.
The one who did not move
Read the whole of Psalm 13 tonight, all six verses, and notice what happens at the end.
He does not get his answer inside the psalm. Nothing is reported as fixed. He simply turns, still holding the question, and says he has trusted in God's mercy, and that his heart will be glad in God's salvation, and that he will sing because God has dealt bountifully with him. The question is still open on the page when the song stops.
That is not a man being talked out of his complaint. That is a man refusing to leave the room he is complaining in.
And that is the whole ask of this article. Not a better prayer. Not a new angle. Just this: stay in the room. The note stays open. You stay too.
And one thing more, said plainly, because six years is a long time to carry something without saying it. If this has taken you somewhere darker than tired, if some part of you has quietly stopped wanting to be here, say so out loud to a living human being today and not tomorrow. In the United States, call or text 988, at any hour of the night. Anywhere else, your local crisis line, and one person who will sit in the room with you tonight. A page cannot do that. You deserve a person beside you, and reaching for one is not a step backward.
This is yours: the same place at His side you had in the first month, with nothing docked for the years since. It is written in Hebrews 4:16 that the throne is one you come to boldly, and it is His Spirit who gives you the standing to walk up to it holding a six year old question, which is exactly the kind of thing He receives.
So here is the turn, and it is quieter than most turns and I am not going to inflate it.
Right now, as you read this, God is nearer to the person holding that phone than the phone is. Psalm 34:18 says He is near to them that are of a broken heart, and it is His Spirit who makes nearness a real condition of this room rather than a comfort somebody offers you at a funeral.
And now the honest thing, both halves of it, in one breath, because this is where the heat is and this is exactly where a promise would be easiest and most dishonest.
God heals. He heals bodies. I believe it, Scripture says it without embarrassment, and this whole site exists because of it. And I do not promise you the result. Not the thing in the note, not the timing of it, not the shape of it. I do not know. Nobody honest does. We say what He has said and the current is His to send. And if it does not come, or does not come the way you have been asking, that is not a verdict on you, not on your faith, not on six years of anything, and anyone who tells you it is has stopped speaking for God and started speaking for themselves.
What I can tell you is what is settled. You were not asked to earn the room you are asking in, and you were not asked to leave it either. That is written into the shape of Psalm 13 itself, a question kept in God's own book with no answer attached, and it is the Spirit of God who keeps a person company inside a question rather than only after it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud on the couch, with the phone face down. You have the standing to say them because Christ is in you and the authority in them is His, handed over in Him, and six years of silence has not reduced it by anything. Scripture is the ground under every line and it is the Holy Spirit who carries them, not the strength of your voice, which is tired, and that is allowed. What God does about the thing in that note is His to decide and I speak all three of these underneath that. Nothing here promises a result or puts a date on one. What is settled is that He kept a man's unanswered question in His own book, and that He has not moved away from you.
- Note with a six year old date at the top, you are a record of asking and you are not a record of failing. Psalm 13 is in the book with its question still open, and God kept it there.
- Conclusion I came to in year four, you told me I had been filed and passed over, and you have no right to stay. Out, in the name of Jesus. It is written that nothing in all creation separates me from the love of God, and His Spirit in me is the proof of it, not the length of the silence.
- Lord, You have not moved, and I am still here, and I am still asking, and tonight I say it to You out loud instead of typing it. Your word keeps the question and Your Spirit keeps me company inside it, and what You do about this body is Yours to decide and not mine to promise. I am staying in this room with You.
